Valencia college: Upgrade WiFi to 802.11ac
1. OBJECTIVE:
UPGRADE VALENCIA’S
NETWORK TO 802.11AC Author: Chase Singhofen
CTS 1134C NETWORKING
Prof. HENNEL
VALENCIA COLLEGE, ORLANDO, FL
/* Products & pricing based on 2016
- 2017 market */
2. HARDWARE: ASSUMING COMPLETE RIP &
REPLACE
22 new 802.11ac WAP’s
Net Gear R6300 tested
best at 331Mpgs.
New or upgraded switch
ports. (Gigabit) 22 new
switch ports.
802.11ac require 2
Ethernet ports. You can
use the old but its
worthless in meeting
your goals.
Dozens of new cable
runs. (about 44)
Updated switch to
support 2 (optional).
Depending on the PoE.
3. COSTS /
MAINTENANCE
FOR UPGRADE
• new 802.11ac wireless: Net Gear
R6300 – about $100/each.
• Net Gear R6300 $100 * 22 =
$2200.
• Cost of new vendor service
(negotiable)
• Maintenance costs (Valencia staff? )
so minimal costs.
• Possible licenses costs.(negotiable)
• About 200 new configuration line
commands
4. (1/2)
PLACEMENT OF NEW 802.11AC
It is best to place
the new
802.11ac in an
open
space/area.
Preferably on a
ceiling next to
windows
Placed away
from a lot of
concrete and
metals.
They shouldn’t
be confined into
a corner in any
particular bldg.
Multiple devices
in tech bldgs. &
libraries due to
amount of users.
Multiple
802.11ac
devices should
spread evenly if
placed in one
bldg.
Never in
the
cafeteria
5. (2/2)
PLACEMENT OF NEW 802.11AC
Possibly place on the
highest floors in the tallest
bldgs.
Find a central location with
minimal traffic.
Avoid interruptions by:
Never positioned directly
around a lot of
people/students/etc...
Isolated from the masses &
other devices still
considering accessibility
challenges
Place the antenna sideways
(optional)
Never in an enclosed
stairwell.
6. COSTS / MAINTENANCES OF UPGRADE
802.11AC IS “FAIRLY” NEW
SO TIME IS MAINLY THE
TEST WITH RELIABILITY
RELIABILITY SHOULD NOT
BE AN ISSUE ONCE TESTED
THINGS TO CONSIDER. HOW
BIG THE CAMPUS? IS IT
RURAL, URBAN ETC.….
802.11AC IS STRONGER
BUT HAS SHORTER BAND
WIDTH.
MIGHT ADD MORE ACCESS
POINTS. IN HIGH USAGE
AREAS.
LEAVE AMPLE TIME TO
CONFIG, REPLACE,
RECONFIGURE, ETC.…
OPEN TIME FRAME FOR
THINGS TO GO WRONG.
7. TIME FRAME AND IMPLEMENTATION
Should plan for months
to implements and test.
Implementation should
be in steps to avoid
minimal interruption's
Should be implemented
over holiday breaks or
in-between semesters.
Maybe 2-3 months of
trial error and
perfections.
802.11ac overlay can
be backup plan.
802.11ac overlay has
minimal disruption in
services.
8. SUMMARY|COST
S
INSTALL
• Considering the overhaul, the costs
are variable except for hardware
purchased.
• Vendors are competitive, so
negotiation and packages are a better
choice.
• Labor is a premium. If Valencia staff
installs, other wise it may be
negotiated with package upgrades.
Sample Install costs:
• $2200 (hardware)* labor *
maintenance * vendor costs = increase
in tuition.
